Kay Womack, longtime librarian and dedicated scholar, passed away in Norman, Oklahoma, at the age of 83.
Born on July 23, 1941, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, to Clifford E. Womack and Clara A. Lancaster, Kay grew up with a love of learning that would define her life’s work. She graduated from Ponca City High School in 1961 and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in library science from the University of Oklahoma in 1965. She later completed her master’s degree and embarked on a distinguished career in academic librarianship.
Over the course of her career, Kay served in the library systems of several major universities, including the University of Washington, the University of Nebraska, the University of Indiana at Bloomington, and the University of Louisville. In 1994, she returned to her home state to join the University of Oklahoma in Norman as librarian and head of the Reference Department at Bizzell Memorial Library. In this vital role—often regarded as the heart of the library—she supervised numerous faculty librarians and championed the essential work of supporting students and faculty directly. A respected leader and prolific researcher, Kay published numerous articles on academic libraries and co-authored the 1978 bibliography Death, Dying, and Grief, a 154-page scholarly contribution to the field.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Kay was known for her vibrant personality and unique passions. She was an enthusiastic follower of the Kentucky Derby and curated an impressive collection of hats.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Deborah. She is survived by her brother, John Womack of Wichita.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 16, at 2:00 p.m. at IOOF Cemetery in Norman, located at 1913 N Porter Ave, Norman, OK 73071.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Norman or the First Presbyterian Thrift Shop.
