Sally Sue Kirk, age 77, was a “Missionary to the world”. She was called to Heaven on the evening of July 8, 2016. She had been ready to meet her Maker for several weeks, but was waiting for God to complete her mansion. She departed this world with a clap of thunder and a bolt of tremendous lightning. Her great niece, Abby Hastings, commented “Sally is in Heaven now”.
Sally was born to Clyde and Marie Kirk in Norman, Oklahoma and was greeted by two sisters as well as her parents. She welcomed a younger sister almost two years later.
Sally graduated from Norman High in 1957 and attended the University of Oklahoma with a B.S. Degree in Medical Technology. Since an internship was required for licensure, Sally was to go to an exotic place. She chose Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she trained for an additional year.
After Hawaii, Sally worked for several years in her field in San Francisco, California. Sally returned to Norman and worked in the medical field before she felt the call to the mission field. She was appointed as a medical missionary to Yemen in 1969 by the Southern Baptist Mission Board. She served there for two and a half years being forced by ill health to resign.
Sally returned to Norman to recuperate after which she worked again as a Medical Technologist. She worked the remainder of her career at the VA hospital in Oklahoma City. After Sally’s retirement from the VA in the early 2000s, she embarked on her “Missionary to the World” career. Sally was associated with a group that went on several short-term mission trips. She went to many countries, including: Paraguay, Panama, Brazil, Romania, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, Ghana, Liberia, Peru, Gabon, Nicaragua, Poland, Latvia, and Mexico.
Sally was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church and worked as an instructor in the Bethel Baptist Women’s ESL program, worked at Mission Norman, and worked at Falls Creek.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Marie Kirk. She is survived by three sisters: Martha MaMakin and her husband Jim of Douglasville, Georgia, Mary Lou Peltier, and Clydette Hastings and husband Carl of Norman. She is also survived by four nieces: Shea Hastings, Annette Peltier, Mignonne Jarman and husband Tommy, and Nicole Peltier; one nephew: Kirk Hastings and his wife Nancy of McKinney, Texas. There are several cousins that have stood by the family, especially James Mosley and his wife Candy of Oklahoma City. Several great-nieces, Abby Hastings, Kaitlyn Hastings, nephews Ric and Colt Jarman and Jonathan Peltier. Sally is also survived by her church family and a host of friends.
Sally was cared for by the McCortney Hospice service and the Hearts at Home Care service. The workers for both services have become like family to Sally’s family.
