Joe Brooks Johnston III, a man whose presence was as big as his heart and whose faith was the cornerstone of his life, went home to be with his Savior on December 21, 2025, in Oklahoma City.
Born on July 23, 1958, at Wesley Hospital in Oklahoma City, to Patricia Simpson Johnston and the late Joe Brooks Johnston Jr., Joe grew up in the Moore and Norman areas. A graduate of Moore schools, he was an active youth in FFA and baseball, later carrying that competitive spirit into many years of league softball. While he spent his early years following a passion for motorcycles, Joe eventually discovered a natural talent for business. As a visionary entrepreneur in the underground utility industry, he founded several successful companies that remain part of his professional legacy today.
Joe’s greatest pride was his family. He shared two daughters, Honor Brooks and Hattie Jo, with Tiffany Gordon . Upon marrying his wife, Kelly, he embraced his role as a "bonus dad" to Madeline and Mallory with open arms and a full heart.
Joe’s life was defined by his service to the Kingdom. Before becoming an active and devoted member of Victory Family Church, he was a longtime member and youth sponsor at Crossroads Cathedral in Oklahoma City. It was there that he first began leading young people to Christ and building deep, lasting friendships with his church family.
Beyond the church walls, Joe had a profound and tireless passion for the homeless and anyone in need. He lived by a simple, powerful conviction that his family and friends knew well: “See a need, fill a need.” Whether it was a stranger on the street or a child wanting to go to church camp, Joe was always ready to help. He held a lifelong dream of sending hundreds of children to camp free of charge—a mission his family is committed to continuing in his honor.
Joe never knew a stranger; he was always ready for a long drive, a deep conversation about life’s challenges, and an opportunity to share his love for Jesus. In every season of his life, Joe leaned on the promise of Romans 8:28: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joe Brooks Johnston Jr. He is survived by his wife, Kelly Johnston; his mother, Patricia Simpson Johnston; his daughters, Honor Brooks Johnston and Hattie Jo Johnston; his stepdaughters, Madeline and Mallory Long; his brothers, Jon (Candy) Johnston and Jeff (Cathy) Johnston; and a vast circle of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Though we feel the profound loss of his presence, we rejoice in the knowledge that Joe is finally at peace with his Lord and Savior, hearing the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 PM on Thursday, January 15, 2026 at Victory Family Church Norman, Oklahoma.
The family requests that donations be made in Joe’s name to Victory Family Church, specifically marked for the “Camp Fund.” It was Joe’s heart’s desire to ensure every child had the opportunity to experience camp, and these gifts will help his dream live on.
