E. Newton Mitchell, Sr. was born January 19, 1933 in Edmond, Oklahoma to Verle Walter Mitchell and Ruby Della (Hartsock) Mitchell. He passed away March 22, 2021 with his son at his side.
Newt grew up in various towns in Kansas spending most of his youth in Hutchinson, Kansas. In the late 1940s, Ruby brought Newt, his older sister Juhree, younger brother Richard and younger sister Jacquita to Norman where Newt would begin high school. He graduated from Norman High in 1952 where he twice lettered in football.
Upon graduation, Newt enlisted in the United States Air Force and served two years, including time in Japan before being honorably discharged. After returning home, he was united in marriage to Martha Brown Mitchell on January 27th, 1955. After they married, Martha attended OU and Newt began his career with the Postal Service and was a rural mail carrier for 41 years. He was proud of his career there and often said if he had it do all over again, he would make the same choice. Never one to rest on his laurels, Newt returned to OU and graduated in 1973, the same year Newt Jr. graduated from Norman High School.
Martha and Newt made their home in Norman and had a full and active life centered around their sons Newt and Scott. They were charter members of Bethel Baptist Church and were both Sunday school teachers. They loved to entertain and had a large circle of friends. Martha lost a valiant battle to cancer in 1982.
Newt enjoyed fishing trips with his sons to their favorite spots in Colorado. Newt and Newt Jr. also made an annual fishing trip to Canada. Newt was always ready for the next trip! He enjoyed being a cattleman and was proud of his Angus herd. Not one to rely on just one or two careers, he ran fireworks stands for 65 years but his most important labor was his family – he was a wonderful father and instilled family values and a strong work ethic in his sons. More importantly, he cherished their mother. As a grandfather, he never missed a horse show, volleyball match or football game. Birthdays were always celebrated and his prayers at family holidays and gatherings were treasured. He was well-versed in current events and would happily share his political ideas and opinions.
Newt was preceded in death by his wife; Martha Mitchell, son; Scott Mitchell, and sister; Jacquita Holt.
