Donald R. Toney, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on March 20, 2023, in Norman, Oklahoma, at the age of 80.
Don was born on March 7th, 1943, in Wapanucka, Oklahoma, to J. Roy and Peggy Toney. He grew up in Stringtown, Oklahoma, where he attended high school. After graduating, he received a Reserve commission in The Army National Guard in 1963 and served his country with honor as a member of the 45th Infantry Division.
In 1965, Don married the love of his life, Carol L. West. They had two sons, Mike and Jon, and three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Joe, and Max, who brought him great joy and pride.
Don had a passion for education and obtained his Bachelor of Sciences degree in Elementary Education from East Central University in 1966. Later, he earned a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1970. He started his career in education as a teacher in Oklahoma and then finished when he retired from Federal Civil Service in Air Force Education Services. His work allowed him to experience living across the country and the world in: Oklahoma, New Mexico, Korea, South Carolina, Nevada, Idaho, Washington state, Ohio, Japan, and Germany.
Don will always be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, and generous spirit. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved to travel, explore new places, and try new foods. Don had many interests and was someone that rarely sat still. He restored his 1951 Chevrolet pick-up truck and enjoyed driving it in Norman parades. He was also a talented artist working in charcoal and western- themed pencil drawings.
Don is survived by his wife Carol Toney, his sons Mike Toney and wife Kim of Edmond, Jon Toney and wife Eleanor of Lawrence, KS, his grandchildren, Elizabeth Toney of Frisco, TX, Joe Toney and wife Ashley of Dallas, TX, Max Toney of Lawrence, KS, and his sisters, Janice Stephan and husband Werner of McKinney, TX, and Marcia Pallutto and husband Mike of Oklahoma City. Don was preceded in death by his parents, J. Roy and Peggy Toney.
At Don's request, there will not be a service to commemorate his life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
