Larry Michael "Mac" Mcelroy

November 25, 1943 — January 23, 2021

Larry Michael “Mac” McElroy, 77 , passed away at home after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. He was born in Norman, OK , November 25, 1943, to Franklin D. “Pete” McElroy and Lucy Ellen Roberts McElroy. The family moved to Pauls Valley, OK, in 1945 where Larry lived until graduating from high school. He loved growing up in Pauls Valley where he made many life-long friends. Larry will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his friends, and his country.

While at Pauls Valley High School, Larry played football and ran track. In football, he was All-District Halfback/Corner. In track, he ran the 220 meter relay and mile relay with the team winning a state championship in 1962. He continued his football and track career at East Central University where he played defensive safety. While playing at ECU, the football team won the conference championship three consecutive years.

After graduating from ECU in 1967 with a degree in Biology, Larry went to Stillwater where he taught science and coached football at Stillwater High School. His football team won the state championship in 1967 and was runner up in 1968. After deciding to make a career change, Larry went to the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy. While at OU, he was a member of Rho Chi Society which is a scholastic society for students in the top ten per cent of their class. He was also a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Larry graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 1971. While living in Norman, Larry served his country for six years in the Air Force National Guard. A second vocation for Larry was the oil and cattle business which he worked in for over 25 years while raising his daughters in Shawnee, OK. Later in his life, he returned to pharmacy and retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in 2010.

Larry met his wife Lesley LaReau in Stillwater, and they were married July 30, 1968. In the next few years, he and Lesley started their family of three beautiful daughters: Lacey McElroy Krivanek, Jamie McElroy Pierce, and Jill McElroy. Their family life consisted of fun vacations with family and friends, keeping up with the activities of three active daughters, and watching OU sports. After retirement, Larry enjoyed playing golf, watching as many of his grandchildren’s activities as he could attend, and having reunions with his high school classmates and college teammates.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Lesley LaReau McElroy of Norman, OK; his daughter and son-in-law Lacey and Louis William Krivanek III of Mustang, OK; daughter and son-in-law Jamie and Gene O. Pierce II of Allen, TX; daughter Jill McElroy and fiancé Erica Anderson of Santa Monica, CA; sister Melinda McElroy Keeley of Norman, OK; grandchildren Logan and Liam Krivanek of Mustang, OK, Oliver, Payton, and Lainey Pierce of Allen,TX; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joe and LaKeta LaReau of Norman, OK; nephews and nieces Kurt and Ryan Keeley, Tyler and Leslie LaReau, Angie and Jimmy Young, and Wade LaReau.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Pete and Lucy McElroy; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Otto and Alice Vaughan, and his nephew Derek LaReau.

Larry had a lifelong love and compassion for all animals. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to the Norman Animal Welfare at P.O. Box 370, Norman, OK 73070.

A graveside service will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, January 28th at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Norman, OK.
