Graveside services will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, September 11 at Norman lOOF Cemetery (1913 N Porter Ave) for Helen Jean (Jones) Floyd, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother known as Mema, who passed away Wednesday, September 5, 2018 in Norman, OK
Helen Floyd lived by her faith and for her family. This was the foundation of her 79 wonderful years. She married her sweetheart, Rex Floyd, 59 years ago and it was a love that grew stronger each day. Helen and Rex started a life together determined to make their dreams come true. She felt creating a family was her calling and followed that calling and passion. Helen and Rex felt blessed as their family grew from five kids to include 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. During this time, she and Rex created a life that was full of adventure, miracles, love, traditions, and growing faith.
In 1969, Helen and Rex co-founded Floyd’s RVs. While their business grew into a thriving company, she continued to follow her passions. Her top priorities were faith, family, and friends. She never stopped supporting, encouraging, and loving her husband, whether it was in his career of running their RV business or living their personal life to the fullest. Rex may have been the face of the business, but she was the inspiration behind the business. The passion that they had for this industry influenced most of the memories we cherish of them today.
Rex and Helen would take their children camping throughout the United States in an RV. Then, as their children grew and made families of their own, they took the grandkids camping to experience the wonders life had to offer. It was a priority of theirs to make sure every single family member felt special. Their travels extended out of the United States into other parts of the world including; China, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Haiti, Greece, all over Europe, Canada, Mexico, and so much more. She went on adventures that many people would not have had the courage to try. Her courage was based on knowing that together, she and Rex would be fine because of their marriage rooted in Christ. Rex was her strength and she was also his, pushing each other constantly to be their best selves.
Many memories were created at her home on the farm. She enjoyed having family and friends over to enjoy a home she designed for entertainment and relaxing. Each day she would step out and find peace in watching her horses enjoy their freedom and Rex’s cows graze. Her home was always open for her neighbors, who she lovingly referred to as dear friends.
Classy was a word that was frequently used to describe Helen. She was gracious in the way she treated others and enjoyed taking pride in her appearance. Through rain or shine, every Thursday, she would be at the salon getting her hair and nails done. Part of her motivation was to look nice and part was to spend time with her hairdresser, Shawn, who became one of her closest friends. Wherever she was and who ever she was with, Helen created that feeling of family, of unconditional love, and of kindness. You could not help but walk away feeling the sincerity of her interest in your well-being and happiness. She created a life of acceptance within her family and others’.
Helen’s church was her second family. She made countless friends through the years as a member at First Baptist Church in Norman. Helen had a powerful bond with the members within her Sunday School class, Primetimers. Growing together in the Word of God, she counted on their support and laughter during the good times and tough. Her faith in God was her foundation for everything: when she needed strength and understanding, she turned to God; when she basked in the warmth of God’s blessing, she praised Him. It was a family tradition to always hold hands and pray together at family gatherings.
To see her, you would see a petite woman, but sports would bring out the competitive side that any athlete would be proud of. She was a star basketball player in high school and was also a strong contender in ping pong tournaments at family events. Following OU football and basketball and the Thunder was one of her passions. She would talk about and watch the games with her children, grandchildren and of course, anyone else who wanted to join her. Humor was always part of her conversations. Many times, she would catch you off guard with some of her puns. You could not help but to just stand there in disbelief and laugh in response.
Helen’s proudest achievements were her ongoing faith in Christ, being the wife to the man she loved for over 59 years, the mother to the children she adored, the mema to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren that brightened her day, and friend to the people that touched her life. To know her was to love her and to know her was to be loved by her.
Helen was born February 20, 1939 in Lexington, OK to Claud H. Jones and Ethel Ellen Jones. She is survived by: daughters Debbie Spearing of Norman and Carol Behrens and husband Doug of Granbury, TX; sons Michael Floyd of Colorado, Kenneth Floyd and wife Valerie of Yukon, and Robert Floyd and wife Tina of Newcastle; sister Juanita Ratliff of Norman; brothers and sisters-in-law Glenn Floyd and wife Judy of Norman, Dr. Koy Floyd and wife Kay of Norman, and Carolyn Taylor of Hot Springs, AR; 16 grandchildren: Jeremy Spearing, Allen Spearing and wife Krystle, Stormi Wester and husband Jeremy, Nathan Behrens, Rachel Behrens, Trent Stout, Cale Stout and wife Jillian, Ashlee Floyd, Bryce Floyd, Jeffrey Shaw, Madison Floyd, Megan Floyd, and Allyson Shaw; seven great-grandchildren: Emma, Kolbie, Hetti Rose (Bean), Boone, Noah, Lucas, and Kace.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Rex Floyd; one unborn child, three brothers: Paul Jones and wife Artie, Wyman Jones and wife Weeta, and Charlie Jones.
Visitation will begin at 4 pm with family receiving friends from 6 pm to 8 pm on Monday, September 10th in the Tribute Memorial Care Event Center (708 24th Avenue NW, DOWNSTAIRS, Norman, 405.292.4787).
