Betty Louise (Allen) Mitchell

January 19, 1942 — November 27, 2020

Betty Louise (Allen) Mitchell was born January 19th, 1942 to E.H. and Fern (McDaniel) Allen in Boise City, Oklahoma and received her eternal reward on November 27th, 2020 in Norman, Oklahoma. Betty grew up in the Wheeless community at the west end of the Oklahoma panhandle, which she always referred to as “God’s Country”.
After graduating from Boise City High School, Betty attended Panhandle A&M College where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education. While attending college, Betty became very innovative in making do with the resources she had available to her. She would often time recall how she used to make grilled cheese sandwiches in her dorm room using her clothes iron and how she and her roommate used a tumbleweed as a Christmas tree. Betty was also quick to discover her dislike for chemistry class, which came as a result of burning down the chemistry lab from a science experiment gone wrong.
Betty married Dewight Mitchell on Thanksgiving Day November 28th, 1963 in Boise City, Oklahoma. She and Dewight eventually made their home in Norman where they raised their family of three daughters. Finding a way to stay home while raising her girls, Betty began teaching ceramics out of the family’s garage. It is from this endeavor that she was eventually introduced to the floral industry by one of her students. On May 17, 1979 Betty and Dewight opened Betty Lou’s Flowers and Gifts and together they operated their flower shop for 38 years. They were blessed to be able to serve Norman in this way. Community was important to Betty. She participated in both the Norman Business Association and Together in Positive Service (TIPS) Club. Church involvement was also important to Betty and her family and she displayed this as she and a close friend developed the very first curriculum for the infants and young children at Westside church of Christ. Betty found great pleasure in pursing her love of quilting and she and Dewight were able to travel the world and frequented Branson, Missouri to enjoy the shows and music they both loved so much.
Betty is survived by daughter Devonne Carter and her husband Jerry and grandchildren Jarrett, Jadyn and Jansen Carter of Edmond, Oklahoma and daughter Dewayna Petre and her husband Bob and grandsons Harrison and Hagen Petre of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Betty was preceded in death by one daughter Deneen Mitchell, her parents and her husband Dewight Mitchell.
